“Architecture is frozen music”
GOETHE
At Sarang, we delight in fern gardens and old temple towns as much as we relish futurist cityscapes. The natural world and the built world, the old and the new, music and spaces are happy companions in our approach to design, and our work tries to emphasise and celebrate this balance.
“Lord of creation,
no one other than thee pervades all these that have come into being.”
STORY
THE SARANG LOGO
Our Sarang logo is a simplified expression of the first note of the scale — Sa. The deep connection between the world of vibration and form is well understood in Yogic tradition. Mantras (sound syllables) and yantras (forms to meditate on) belong together. When chanted correctly, the mantra Om forms at first, a circle, then various triangles, and as the ‘mmm’ fades to silence, the Sri Yantra you see is completed. For those who enjoy the surprising world of sound and form, this music video is a playful introduction to the world of cymatics.
Our mainspring
The values and commitments that guide our work
01 | Outside In
At one with our environment
We design to respond to local climate and site conditions, maximising users’ comfort and health while minimising energy use. We pay close attention to factors such as building orientation to catch the sun and winds, placement of rooms, and sizing and positioning of windows for ventilation. The materials palette is selected for energy efficiency with effective application of insulation, seals, solar shading elements, low-emissivity glass, double- and triple-glazed windows, and high thermal mass building products. These principles help us reduce energy consumption by as much as 40 percent in sustainable homes.
o2 | Inside out
In harmony with our bodies
Our spaces and furniture affect nearly every aspect of our lives in deep, fundamental ways – illnesses, aches and allergies often manifest as a direct consequence of our lifestyles and posture. The quality of the air we breathe, the hours of sunlight we enjoy, the healing touch of earth beneath our feet. We choose non-toxic paints and finishes and high performance natural materials that ensure low maintenance and long-term durability. At Sarang, every detail is considered to shape inspiring spaces that are in tune with our minds and bodies, in sync with our natural rhythms.
03 | Backward, forward
Reinvention and renewal
We treasure old beams, arches, pillars and doors. We have repurposed what many regard as debris into beautiful side tables, elegant low seating, mirror frames and bedposts. Even humble offcuts find their use. We remember the qualities and potential uses of forgotten items and seek out their essence in new forms. In our systems, we seek out energy-efficient equipment, water-saving fittings, LEDs, rainwater harvesting and greywater systems, natural lighting systems, solar water heating and lighting and green roofs to take our practice closer to our Net Zero energy and carbon neutral goals.
Our journey to
this moment
Sarang is propelled by love for architecture and craftsmanship. Over the last decade we have collaborated on projects ranging from residential architecture and interior design to furniture for a luxury resort.
In 2020, we set our sights on sustainable construction. Caught between the extremes of mass-produced or ultra premium, we knew there had to be a better way. Within a year we launched Sarang Homes with the groundbreaking Ooru.
We live on the outskirts of Bengaluru — seeking a healthy balance of life, good home food, and new journeys to explore our precious planet.
